Why Does The Server You Connect to Matter in Marathon?
The game server you play on is the largest determining factor on your connection quality in Marathon. This is because the your game data has to travel from your PC or console to and from the game server. The greater the distance it has to travel, the higher your in-game ping will be.
You would assume the game wouldn't connect you to far away high ping server, but matchmaking algorithms have to consider a wide range of factors when assigning you a server. Factors like your skill level or how long you've been waiting for a match may take priority, and as a result your connection may suffer due to being allocated a far away server.
How to Select Your Server in Marathon
Without a server selector setting in Marathon, you're completely at the mercy of the matchmaking algorithm to allocate you a server with low ping.
